This week, Microsoft finally unveiled the much-awaited Office 2013 amid much fanfare. However, the software giant did not say anything regarding the Office apps that are to run on its upcoming Windows Phone devices. However, the company’s cloud technology blog has revealed some details regarding the new mobile edition of Office 2013. The post also shows a mock-up of Office 2013 on the upcoming Windows Phone 8. The new iteration of Microsoft Office will probably offer deep integration, with all kinds of office docs syncing across different platforms. Reading position sync is also on the cards.

Microsoft has officially launched the Office 2013 Consumer Preview (public beta). If you’re curious as to what the main features to be included in Office 2013 will be, they are as follows:

  • SkyDrive – Office will now save your documents directly to SkyDrive by default. This ensures that all your documents will always be available across multiple platforms- phone, tablet and PC.
  • Skype - Office 2013 also offers Skype integration. As soon as you subscribe, you will get 60 minutes of the Skype world minutes each month. You can integrate your Skype contacts into Lync and then IM or call any friend on Skype.
  • Yammer - Yammer offers a private, secure social network primarily for businesses. Signing up is free of cost. Yammer also integrates Microsoft Dynamics and SharePoint.
  • Roaming – After you sign in to Office, all your personalized settings, which includes your recently used templates, files and custom dictionary, will be available to you on all your devices. Office will also remember where you left off and will take you back to that location in just one click.
  •
  • New subscription services - Office 2013 has been made available in the form of a cloud-based subscription service. Once you’re a subscriber, you will automatically be eligible for future upgrades. You can also access other cloud services like extra SkyDrive storage and Skype world minutes.

With Office 2013, it is clear that Microsoft has dramatically redesigned its strategy by shifting from its PC-specific functionality, to the new look of Windows 8, cloud technology and touch functionality.
